Paintings by Dominic Zeff

'Photo Realism'

“Where and how I begin a painting is entirely fortuitous. I may draw on my own experience or other peoples or marry the two. Often I ask someone anywhere in the world what’s happening in their lives, what’s important to them, what they'd like to see in a painting.....”

“I may use photographs, extracts from diaries, objects, messages on the internet in fact anything. I then orchestrate an image often taking place through a particular time-span, and slowly build a story. Where they begin and end is arbitrary as is the dividing line between my own intentions and those of others.”

“This approach, I hope, keeps me grounded in 'life' rather than 'secluded' in art.”

Dominic Zeff was born in London in 1965. From 1983 until 1987 Dominic studied Philosophy and Art at Sussex University, Brighton.

Upon graduating Dominic was contracted to the Richard Salmon Gallery, London. A gallery with a reputation for representing some of the finest artist's in the contemporary art world. Dominic parted from the Salmon Gallery in 1993 to travel and paint throughout Asia, The Middle East, Europe and North Africa.

In 1997 Dominic was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Cleaner air and warmer climate attribute to him now living in Turkey. Unfortunately Dominic can no longer paint, although he feels that through a combination of yoga and martial arts he is better able to communicate with his mind and body.

The paintings are made by mixing natural pigment with water and binding gels. They are built up in layers so that the effect becomes more and more impasto. Each canvas takes between six and ten weeks to complete.

Between each layer of pigment are protective transparent gels which means they are extremely hardy and resistant to ultra-violet light and changes in temperature. They should however, like all paintings be maintained in a moderate temperature.
